Worksheet: Story Detective Case File
Become a story detective and figure out what makes your favourite stories so good.
Suitable for ages 8+
The Story Detective Case File is a worksheet I made for my kids’ creative club Story Spark. We used it in our first club meeting on June 4th at Read on Sea, Leigh-on-Sea.
The purpose of the worksheet is to encourage readers to explore stories in more depth and learn to see the details and patterns of compelling stories. It’s a learning aid, and like all good learning aids, not every question will have a definitive answer – the point is to slosh all the ideas around in your brain and get you thinking:))
How it works (super simple!)
Grab your favourite book, or one you’d like to study. This worksheet can be used with all kinds of books, from picture books and chapter books to graphic novels and more.
With the worksheet printed out or on a screen you can write on, answer the questions by reading or skimming through the book.
Remember! Sometimes the answers are not as straightforward as you might think. The main character, for example, could be several people, not just one. This is because the main character is usually defined as someone you the reader care about – and that can make things a bit subjective.
If you’d like to do stuff like this with a creative guide, sign up for my Story Spark club and we’ll work on it together!
