Hi, I’m Sam…
…a Scottish-Malaysian writer and cartoonist based in England. You may know me from such cartoony capers as Welcome to Agency X (published in The Star newspaper, 2015-2016) Questionable Quotebook (web syndicated by GoComics since 2016), or #ETCETERAcomic (posted semi-regularly to Instagram).
Or you may have stumbled upon my little corner of the internet thanks to my debut middle grade graphic novel SCHOOLBOT 9000, published in July 2025 by the wonderful team at Penguin Kids. As we move deeper into the age of AI, I really feel that SCHOOLBOT 9000 can be a helpful conversation piece for parents and kids, and it’s a project that I’m very proud of.
In another life, I wrote advertising copy for huge brands that we all know and — OK, ‘love’ might be a stretch too far. Today, as an author and cartoonist, I’m constantly drawing from those experiences (and my fascination for life’s absurdities in general) to create writing and art that gives readers something to laugh — and think about.
How it started… how it’s going
I started writing and drawing as a career in 2010, kicking things off with NO! A Lesson in Love — a picture book about my beloved mini schnauzer Jang Gun (Korean for “army general” because of his beardy face!) Living in Malaysia at the time, I self-published NO! A Lesson in Love, had it added to the national library’s archives, and organised my own book launch event at the much respected Annexe art gallery. NO! A Lesson in Love explored messages of responsible and loving dog ownership, while keeping things both relatable and humorous. It was my first big project, and it definitely gave me the storytelling bug.
From copywriter to cartoonist
I started my career in advertising, working as a copywriter for agencies including McCann (where I was the pluckiest intern they’d ever met), Dentsu, Y&R, and M&C Saatchi. I wrote TV and radio scripts, newspaper and magazine advertisements, and helped develop big campaigns for brands like Nestlé, Petronas, and Al-Rajhi Bank.
While in the creative world of advertising, I got back into drawing — something I’d loved as a young girl obsessed with Sailormoon — and in 2015 I came up with a comic strip called Welcome to Agency X, inspired by the bizarre world of advertising agencies (if you know, you know).
My first big break in comics? When Welcome to Agency X was picked up by Malaysian newspaper, The Star, and published every day for a year to more than 1.8 million readers nationwide. The comic strip struck a chord with kids and office workers alike and was later compiled into a collection and released by Malaysian indie publisher Keropok Comics.
When that contract ended in 2016, my pen (and Apple pencil) got busy creating Questionable Quotebook — a satirical quote of the day cartoon published by Universal Uclick (GoComics) and now enjoyed by over 1,500 readers every Sunday. The cartoon is equal parts ridiculous and wise, full of pithy musings on society, relationships, politics, family and more.
From cartoonist to author
In 2021, I started working on a graphic novel called SCHOOLBOT 9000 — a process that would take several years, plenty of edits, mugs and mugs of coffee, and a lot of love. I finalised the manuscript before ChatGPT came out, and it was a crazy time seeing the whole world start asking the very questions about artificial intelligence that I was asking from my tiny studio here in England. SCHOOLBOT 9000 came out in July 2025 to lovely reviews from Kirkus and School Library Journal, and was given a red star from Publishers Weekly.
From author to ???
I’m currently working on my second book. The sophomore album, EEK! I’m focused on creating something that will be fresh and interesting, and maybe quite a bit different from what readers are expecting. Stay tuned!
I also like to post new cartoons and comic ideas (to describe them as semi-regular would be generous) on Instagram. One of these is my comic strip ET CETERA, where I unleash my most random thoughts and hot takes onto my unsuspecting followers. Another comic strip baby is AbracaBarbara.
I’m always curious to see what’s over the next horizon and I love to meet new collaborators in the journey. Feel free to get in touch.
My graphic novel Schoolbot 9000 is now available in bookstores!
“Schoolbot 9000 is the story of 11-year-old James Gordon, whose school is chosen to pilot a revolutionary new AI teaching bot program. Realising that his beloved teachers will be replaced by robots, James teams up with some unlikely allies to fight back. Schoolbot 9000 is a fun-filled big bad tech adventure, packed with heart and humour, and an unmistakable humanity in the age of AI.”
